Report of 2002 Vintage

The rain and normal average temperatures for the period in the early part of the year permitted the vines to develop vegetation normally without disease.
In July veraison began a few days earlier than the previous year thanks to the high early summer temperatures, while a sudden drop in temperature due to rainfall in later July and early August delayed its completion. Frequent rain in August was the cause of unusually lush vegetation and the particularly large grapes, requiring special precautions against parasites. The less vigorous vines with average-sized grapes were more fortunate, since they were less prone to health problems.

The weather conditions described above delayed the harvest by a few days compared to recent years - harvesting began in late September and lasted until 20th October.
The weather during the harvest was often sunny which enabled the Sangiovese grapes to achieve a good level of technological and phenological ripeness, despite being the worst affected by the rainfall in August.
Understandably the best results were obtained in the vineyards where the bunches were thinned and selected prior to the harvest to remove the less healthy and ripe grapes.
The wines obtained with careful vinification showed a balanced alcohol content (13-13.5% voI.) and a total acidity slightly higher than average in past years.
The level of extract and polyphenolic compounds is sufficient but lower than previous years. This is also true of the Cabernet and Merlot-based wines - although made from perfectly ripe grapes they are not very rich in extract.
The lowish temperatures during ripening preserved the aromas which are therefore lively and pleasant.
Two years after the harvest, the 2002 vintage wines show lower levels of extract than the previous vintages but are very stylish with particularly interesting aromas.
