Features of the 2004 Vintage

The fairly low temperatures and frequent rain persisted through April, May and early June 2004 until the long spring gave way to a cool summer with less sunlight than average.
The temperatures rose again but without the typical dry heat of July and August seen in recent years. The maximum temperatures rarely exceeded 30°C, and the weather was often cloudy, with occasional heavy rain. September and October followed this trend.
The weather trend of 2004 was "normal" moderate temperatures, no excessive sunlight and plenty of water - and consequently some of the phenological phases were delayed and prolonged.
Budbreak took place in early April and was followed by slow development of the shoots and delayed flowering, which began in the first ten days of June and lasted over two weeks.
The grapes grew to a satisfactory size thanks to the abundant rain and veraison began in early August.
The grapes ripened slowly and gradually to achieve balanced technological and phenological ripeness in the middle of October, when most wineries harvested.

The Vino Nobile 2004 differs considerably from recent vintages with very interesting features. The fÌrst tasting, not long after malolactic fermentation, showed bright purply-red colour and particularly complex aromas.
The alcohol content was between 13 and 13.5% vol. with fairly high levels of acidity, medium-high polyphenols, satisfactory anthocyans and sweet tannins.
The analytical and organoleptic overview obtained from samples from various areas shows the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2004 to be a balanced, well-structured wine which will age well.
