The Cantine in Piazza - literally, "Wine Cellars in the Piazza" - is an annual tasting and celebration that has become the traditional prelude to the “A Tavola con il Nobile” cookery competition. On Friday 22 August, from 8 pm, Piazza Grande will once again host the prestigious festival that sees the producers of the Vino Nobile presenting the best local wines for tasting. The event attracts visitors, wine lovers and connoisseurs from all over the world.
The evening's celebrations are presented by the Consorzio del Vino Nobile in collaboration with the Magistrato delle Contrade. Visitors will be given the opportunity to taste the Nobile DOCG, the Rosso di Montepulciano DOC, and other quality Montepulciano wines, accompanied by traditional local food, including extra virgin olive oils, Pecorino cheeses and cured meats. The tastings are held by the producers of the wines themselves, who talk visitors through the characteristics of their various wines and other local specialities. The festival is run by the Magistrato delle Contrade, the organisation that represents Montepulciano's districts: it is just the beginning of a packed week of activities leading up to the Bravìo delle Botti barrel race, taking place this year on 31 August.
Cantine in Piazza also inaugurates a week of menus and tastings, some organised by the districts' committees, others presented by Montepulciano's many renowned restaurants and winebars that, for the occasion, will be presenting themed menus and tastings, with the Vino Nobile in pride of place.
